Several years ago, before my husband and I emigrated to the beautiful land down under we were discussing whether we thought dogs from Australia barked with an accent, to which my husband exclaimed “Of course! They say ‘Woof, mate!’”
… and so Woof Mate Brisbane was born!
I’m Lisa - friend to all dogs; trainer; walker; photographer; adventurer; wife to a marvellous, supportive (tolerant!) husband, dog mum to the beautiful Rupert Droopington and more recently a mum to our gorgeous small human Mabel.
I have had a passion for animals for as long as I can remember, and have worked with dogs in various capacities for over 15 years. Following a degree in Animal Science, I pursued a career in the pet care sector but it wasn't until 2013 when I took the leap and started up my own business. No, not this one! The parent business to Woof Mate, Curly Canine Care (click the link to see how much fun we had!) a dog walking and boarding business based in Plymouth, UK. As it turns out, you can't just like dogs to work with them in such a full on environment, you have to be a little bit obsessed, and that is me to a tee! Just look at all these beautiful, happy, doggy faces I got to hang out with everyday …
Mine were the most fabulous, furry colleagues and it wasn’t long until I realised I had truly found my vocation in life! It broke my heart to leave them behind when we made the big move to Brisbane, but the dream of life in Australia was one my husband and I had long shared and we had to take that leap: now 4 years in and we haven’t looked back.
Less than 2 months after we moved here however, the pandemic struck and my big plans to launch an equivalent business here in Brisbane were sadly put on hold. I haven’t been entirely dormant though - I’ve been learning and honing my skills and knowledge as a dog handler and over the last couple of years I was in charge of running the puppy schools at a well known pet store and have seen almost 300 good boys and girls graduate! They say you learn the most about a subject by teaching it and after the last 3 years I have learnt more than ever about dogs; how they learn, how their purpose and instincts affects their character, their nutritional needs, how to enrich their lives and so much more. Now I’m here, combining everything these years and all these dogs have taught me to offer my very own, unique, tailored dog walking and training (and photography!) service to the wonderful dog pawrents here in Brisbane.
